Moving homes can be one of the most exciting times in your life. Everyone remembers their first time stepping over the threshold into the place they will call home for years to come.
However, if you allow it, this move can also be the most stressful time in your life. Paperwork, packing, and a seemingly endless list of logistics all piling up at once – it’s easy to overthink things.
That’s why we’ve created a moving house tick list, perfect for first-time buyers and anyone who wants to stay ahead of the chaos.
Having a clear goal to work towards is the best way to keep track of your progress, ensuring that things are all in order in good time.
The earlier, the better – especially if you’re moving on a weekend when removal companies are bound to be busiest!
Get rid of anything you don’t want to take with you. It’ll make packing easier.
Things like contracts, ID, and receipts – you’ll need them handy and safe.
Label your boxes by room so you know where everything goes. This will make the move a lot smoother.
Let your gas, electric, water, broadband, and TV providers know your move date so that any potential complications can be resolved before you move.
Remember to have your post sent to your new home from your moving date onwards. You don’t want any essential letters being sent to your old address!
Make sure everything is left in good condition, especially if you’re renting. You want your full deposit back, right?
Take photos of your gas, electric and water meters before you leave. This will help prevent any inaccurate bills.
Look in every cupboard and drawer – it’s easy to miss things.
Make sure you know where to leave them or who to give them to. If you’re renting, you’ll probably be asked to post them through the letterbox.
Take meter readings and ensure everything is functioning properly.
You’ll want coverage in place from day one – just in case.
Let your bank, GP, workplace, and any subscription services know you’ve moved home.
These are the things you don’t want to be hunting for during an emergency.
That’s the end of our list! It may seem like a lot to get through, but with weeks or even months to work with, you can make progress as you march towards the moving day.
Hopefully, this list will provide you with as much excitement and anticipation as possible as you begin to move along the process.
